We are only through the second book in this series, but I’m eager to find out the remainder of the story. The tone is markedly different in each book. The only downside is each book is written by a different author, and you can tell. There’s lots of action and emotion, and despite making my son cry a couple of times (there was a moving moment in a recent chapter), he still gets excited to find out what happens next. They don’t get along great, and sometimes they just want to go back home to mom. The kids are wholly realistic, full of flaws and charm.

It’s up to the four children and their spirit animals to enlist the aid of the remaining great beasts to defeat the conquerors. The world is now under threat from the conquerors, who live in an an impoverished nation that does not have access to the elixir - so they have learned ways of forcing the bonding and are now coming to take over. This caught the attention of the organization of the Greencloaks, who are the keepers of the elixir and the defenders of the world. This story follows a group of 4 kids who not only summoned spirit animals, but they have each summoned one of the 12 great beasts of legend. In the past, bonding with these animals was painful and dangerous now an organization has discovered an elixir that makes this painless and safe - therefore every child, on their 12th birthday, drinks the elixir.

The series follows a group of kids who live in a world where some humans have the ability to summon spirit animals. I’m clumping this in with YA, despite being for a younger reader, because this reads like it is speaking to teens. And that, dear followers, speaks very highly of this series as I’m not a fan of most YA. I’m reading this series with my son, and we’re both very much enjoying it.
